Healcrest Winter Retreat

Happy Winter Holidays everyone out there! Its been a snowy December so far and we are busy bees right now at Healcrest filling holiday orders, taking care of our little hens and keeping our little corner of the world in order over the winter months.

Image

If you havent heard, Healcrest successfully entered an incubator program this November! The Idea Foundry Intersector Program will provide us with 3-4 months of business development support and we are utilizing that time to build new internal structures for farm and product management! We look for 2014 to be a great year for getting Teapops, Teas and a few other choice quality herb-based edibles into your lives! We believe strongly in the quality of our products coming out of Healcrest and are excited to get them into the world. If you have a store, a cafe or somewhere special you would like to see our Teapops or Teas, please dont hesitate to drop us a line!

On that note, the budding partners of Healcrest Urban Farm decided to take some time to  build up on our relationships and plan for the coming year by celebrating and working deep in nature. We headed this past weekend to Cook’s Forest for some wintry walks, warm cabin work time and delicious shared meals! In building up a social enterprise that believes in the triple-bottom line of people, planet and profits – we are working to ensure that our values match our business identity and that each move, as we grow, reflects our commitment to the original Garfield lots we sit on and the greater health and wellness of the people we serve everywhere.

Looking Forward to Sunnier Skies!!

SUN + WATER = LIFE

Our little hill in Garfield is in the perfect spot to soak up the glorious sun. On a clear day, you can see open skies and Pittsburgh’s East End for miles. With resources in abundance the natural forest and wild plant growth has taken over.

So it is our longtime desired project to begin some forest maintenance and tree felling. A daunting task when standing in the shadow of a century old Maple wondering how do you cut down something so HUGE.

We have several areas to work with in the long term and a few specific areas of immediate focus, small stands of Black Locust shading out the rowed herb garden, and the raised bed garden; and the BIGGEST shade producer, the Maple.

Resources and connections blessedly show up when we need them most and with the help of Jason Boone of Urban Tree LLC, Josiah Leisher of Leisher Landscapes, and a little side support from G-Tech……..TIMMBBEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sustainable tree reclamation and land-use management, along with mutually beneficial collaborations will surely make for BRIGHT and SUNNIER skies this season!

Summer rainbow over our pot of gold!

And we mean BAAADDDAAASSS!!!!

Us over here in the Garfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh have been working tail to head on our gardens. By the end of this post we have harvest 5lbs of rasberries, 2 quarts or more of gigantic sweet blackberries, lavender, chocolate mint, peppermint, spearmint and we are just getting started!!!

Because of our good friends Jen and Jon – we have bees buzzing in their lovely hives, drinking up water and pollinating our crops! Apples and grapes are growing well this year and everything is in bloom!

Can’t wait for greenhouse tomatoes, celery, strawberries, okra, watermelon and fresh in the raised beds – swiss chard, summer squashes, more tomatoes, macha, sweet peppers and more! You can see we are over the hazy moon here at Healcrest!

Dried Lavender for final inspection

Dana, fresh off the job market – is taken her hours to cultivate Healcrest and get orders out on Etsy! If your a loyal Etsyian – feel free to email us or ask any question – we will surely answer you as swift as we can.

Remember to check out our products on Etsy

Borage             Bee Balm

Red Clover       Lemon Verbena

Rosemary        Sage

IntroKickerWinterWarmer!

Well, we missed a September blogpost…but no harm..as there is a lot going on here and its the right time to discuss it with our fans and followers!

Our Kickstarter campaign is running strong. We encourage everyone to donate even a little bit towards the campaign and we are meditating like heaven that a large backer who loves Pittsburgh and urban farming and ultra-pure products and vacant land restoration and green space will come along and give us 50% of what we need – or maybe even 100%!! Please check out the great little video about the farm and consider backing

And the other big news…is that as the world gets to know our little tiny space in Pittsburgh, our product line is growing. Each year at Healcrest the space we have cultivated for herb production increases and the amount of product we can output increases. That in addition to serving more than just women – but the families they love and nourish – we have been expanding our line to include men and children in all capacities – from body care to internal wellness and whole food supplements. Also, in seeking to better align the products with the work and activity of Healcrest, we are making a name change to: The Healing Moon.

With Healing at our root and the moon as our evening guidance and the symbol of the female we continue on to nurture women and to include their loved ones in the people who can find health and wholeness in natural beauty and medicine.

Our Etsy site will redirect at either the Vital Mother Moon, VitalMoon or TheHealingMoon handle and in the next few months you will find a completely new and exciting website that has Healcrest, our blog, our info and The Healing Moon products and info in a 1-stop shop! Look out people!

So take care in the cold everyone, think of green grass, beautiful flowers and warming sun as we approach our introspective winter!

Looking forward!
